The Fire Department

Living on Coxwell Avenue would definitely be called "Urban Living".  As most of you know, up the street from us is Toronto East General Hospital and that makes our lives very interesting.  You see, with the Hospital so close we are constantly hearing the sirens from the Ambulance, Police and Fire Departments as they race towards their destination.  It is wonderful that we live in a city with such a fantastic Emergency System but it does tend to make dining conversation interesting.  We are hardly conscious of the screeching sirens anymore but we automatically pause in the middle of a sentence until the decibels have decreased to the point where we can be heard again.  Even our two black labs, Samson and Delilah, are so used to the blaring sounds that they don't even rouse when they're lying there sleeping at our side.

This is a picture of Samson & Delilah relaxing one evening after a hard day of playing with 50 of their most intimate doggie friends at their Doggie Daycare.  They are oblivious to any sounds - even screeching sirens!

Believe it or not, during dinner we will often discuss Health and Wellness ideas and concepts.  Our society is full of a lot of misconceptions about Health and Prevention.  Sometimes those misconceptions are because they lack the proper information and sometimes it is because they've been misdirected in their thinking.

For example, most people mistakenly believe that going for a regular Medical Check-Up (Physical Exam, Mammogram, Prostate Exam, Blood Work, etc.) is a form of PreventionIT IS NOT!  Finding a problem during a Medical Exam is called Detection NOT Prevention.  The purpose of that Exam is to look for and DETECT problems, it cannot prevent them.  If a problem is found, it means that you've already developed a health issue and THAT isn't Prevention it is Detection.  If they don't find a problem it still doesn't mean that anything was prevented, it simply means that you didn't have anything they were looking for during that examination.  It doesn't mean that you won't develop a problem down the road.  The only thing that can work as Prevention is YOU taking responsibility for your Choices and Environments.

If your MD does detect a problem during your physical exam, then they may prescribe drugs, surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, etc.  That is also NOT Prevention, that IS Correction.  It would be a grave error in judgment to assume that the MD's Correction will prevent further problems.  Taking a drug, having surgery, etc. does not prevent anything - it corrects or removes or masks something - but it is still up to you to eliminate the Bad Choices or Bad Environment that caused the problem in the first place.  If you do not change things in your life then the problem may reappear or other problems may start.

Some people will try and argue that if they 'catch' (detect and correct) something early enough, then they are preventing it from getting worse.  However, detecting and correcting a symptom so that it doesn't get worse IS NOT the same thing as preventing a disease from occurring in the first place.

Detection (physical exams, tests, etc.)  can NEVER move you toward health.  They can find a problem but they can NEVER move you toward health.

Correction (Drugs and Surgeries) can NEVER move you toward health.  They can mask symptoms, remove body parts or fix a problem but they can NEVER move you towards health.

There is a great allegory that I first heard many years ago, that I think will help put things in a better perspective for you.  Let's just say that in this allegory you live in a nice little house (the house represents your body).  You are very happy and photo_42986_20110524.jpg comfortable in the little house.  As the years go by, you are having lots of fun but you have gotten into a bad pattern of not doing any maintenance on the house.  You believe that doing maintenance (Healthy Eating, Moving and Thinking) for your house isn't any fun, it costs money, it's boring and it's hard work, etc.  Besides, everything seems to be just fine and you're having too much fun or you are too busy with day to day life to be bothered.

One day, because of the lack of maintenance, the wiring in your happy little house becomes so frayed that it causes a fire.  The fire begins to spread very quickly.  So what should you do?  Of course, you need to call the Fire Department (in this analogy they represent the Medical Doctors), and do it fast!  They will come as quickly as they can with sirens screeching.  When they get there, they will pull out their Fire Axes and photo_45700_20110612.jpgHoses (Drugs and Surgeries) and begin smashing out all your doors and windows, opening up all your walls and soaking down all your precious possessions.  If they're not too late and they don't make a mistake, they may actually save your house - for which you should be eternally grateful.  This is where the Medical Profession truly shines and does an incredible job - Emergencies.

The next morning, you are so grateful and still admiring the work they did at saving you house, but you begin to realize that the house is a smoldering, drenched mess - unfit to live in.  What do you do now?  Do you call the Fire Department again with their Fire Axes and Hoses?  Will Fire Axes and Hoses repair the damage to your walls, windows and cherished possessions even if the Fire Department claims they will?  Will Fire Axes and Hoses help your house move back to being healthy and happy?  Absolutely not!  You need Carpenters - renovation/maintenance experts (Wellness Chiropractors) who can help you clean up the mess, fix the walls and windows and rebuild your little house.  Over time, with the help of a Carpenter andphoto_31762_20110225.jpg some proper maintenance, you can restore your house back to its healthy, happy state.

The Fire Department tries to tell people that Carpenters aren't very important because they don't have the tools to put out fires - and from their point of view they are correct.  Carpenters don't have the tools to put out fires.  But, the Carpenters could easily say that the Fire Department isn't important because they can't restore a house back to Health and Happiness - they don't have the right tools - and from a Carpenters point of view that is correct.  Imagine the Fire Department showing up at your house after a fire with their Fire Axes and Hoses trying to do the re-wiring, framing, dry wall, fine carpentry, etc.  They would look pretty silly.  So who's right?  They both are!  They are both needed.  The trick is knowing which resources to use at the appropriate time.

Drugs and Surgery (Fire Axes and Hoses) may save your life when things have gone so wrong that your body is in danger of failing, but they can NEVER return you to health.  You need Healthy Eating, Healthy Thinking and Healthy Moving.  You need to know what Healthy Eating, Thinking and Moving are in the first place and I guarantee you that they aren't what you are being told they are or what you think they are.  That's where Wellness Chiropractors (the Carpenters and their tools) like me come in.  Our job is to help you rebuild when there has been a problem and teach you how to prevent other problems from occurring in the first place.

Only Wellness Strategies (Prevention) can stop a problem from starting.  If a problem does occur, you can only move back toward health if you bring Wellness Strategies into your life.

If someone develops cancer (or any other lifestyle disease), then it becomes self-evident that they have either made too many Bad Choices in their lifestyle that have ultimately overwhelmed their body's abilities to stay healthy - and/or, they have been exposed to Bad Environments that have overpowered their body's regulatory systems.   That is just pure unadulterated Science -Pure Physic's - it's called 'Cause & Effect'.

Once the diagnosis of cancer has been made, then the tests, biopsies, etc. start so the MD's can determine a treatment plan, which more often than not, includes surgery with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.  When that is all said and done - when the surgeries are finished and the chemotherapy or radiation is over - then what?  Should the person just go back to life as usual?  Should they return to the Bad Choices and living in the Bad Environment that triggered the cancer (or other disease) in the first place by overwhelming the body's abilities to maintain its state of health?  Should they just sit there, wait idly, and hope it doesn't come back?  Or, should they take positive action, get proactive and realize that if they want to return to health, they need to start removing the Bad Choices and replace them with Good Ones.  Should they get under the care of a Wellness Chiropractor who can guide them back towards health?  Should they try to remove as many toxins in their environment as they can to clean up their Bad Environment?  Of course they should!

For the last 50 years, each year, every year, we get more doctors, more nurses, more hospitals, more drugs and surgeries - every single year.  Yet, we are sicker and sicker every single year with cancer rates soaring.  Detection and Correction aren't enough and it isn't like we aren't getting better and better at it - we are.  It's because Medicine is being completely snowed under with the massive increase in cancer cases - and for that matter, all lifestyle diseases.  We can't increase the funding fast enough to keep up.  What we are currently doing is Albert Einstein's definition of insanity: "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."  It is insanity not to look closely at our Sick Care System and make changes to include Wellness Care.  It is insanity to keep throwing sick people at MD's, with ever increasing numbers, and keep expecting them to fix everyone.  It is insanity not to put a concerted effort into Prevention to slow down the rate of new disease.  There is no longer any question that Wellness Care and Prevention are absolutely mandatory if we want a healthier society.

In the next blog I'll get into my personal journey of moving toward Health and Wellness.
