Honey Volcano

Often times, patients make the assumption that I have always been making appropriate Wellness and Healthy Living Lifestyle choices.  So, Have I?  Did I always Eat, Move and Think in Healthy ways?  Am I always perfect in my choices?  Absolutely not!  Like everyone else, I have done my fair share of unhealthy things and made lots of mistakes (Sharon loves nothing better than to point them all out to me).

Now that we are 'Empty Nesters', on Saturday nights, Sharon and I like to have a IMG01721_20110917_1922.jpg special dinner.  When the weather is good we eat out on our 'City Cottage Deck' and enjoy the evening.  If the weather isn't great we retire to our dining room for a nice candle lit meal.  At out last Saturday night special dinner the weather wasn't so good so we decided to eat in the dining room.  We did barbequed, hickory smoked, grass  fed beef (strip loin steaks) with hickory smoked portabella mushroom (with butter, garlic and onion); a large green salad with romaine lettuce, celery and baby cucumbers using a vinaigrette dressing.  We had a Perrin Reserve Cote De Rhone French red wine with our meal.

For dessert we had watermelon, strawberries and blueberries with organic Greek IMG01481_20110824_1431.jpg Yogurt.  Sharon likes to put cinnamon on her dessert.  I on the other hand decided to be quite sinful and have a "Honey Volcano" - Oh Ya!!!!!!  Now you are probably  asking "What in the world is a Honey Volcano?"  It is pure decadence!  It is Greek Yogurt formed in the shape of a mountain with the centre scooped out (to form the volcano).  The Volcano is then filled with honey - WOW is it good!IMG01421_20110810_2034.jpg

As I sat there eating my invention I could see the glare that Sharon was giving me as IMG01422_20110810_2036.jpg she shook her head in disbelief (actually I think she really wanted one too but couldn't admit it).  Even the dogs liked what they saw - they sat there drooling the whole time I was indulging.  When I finished (I saved a little taste for the dogs) Sharon asked if I was satisfied and I said "Yes I am, thank you very much - it was delicious".  But, I knew she was right - I had made a Bad Choice.  But, that begs the question "Why?"  Why is it that we make Bad Choices?  Why do we allow ourselves and our loved ones to live in Bad Environments?

It took me a while to put all the pieces of that perplexing puzzle together (15 - 20 years).  When I finally got that "Ah-ha moment" and the light bulb turned on, it opened my eyes -like taking the 'Red Pill' in the movie 'The Matrix'.  I'd like to share some of those insights with you.

There are basically three reasons why we make Bad Choices:

1. We make Bad Choices because we don't know that they are Bad Choices.  We were never informed that those Choices were not conducive with Good Health, either because no one knows yet that the choice is bad or because there is no public education system in place so that you can be properly informed.

2. We were deliberately misled by our information sources (primarily the Mainstream Media [T.V., Radio, Newspapers & Magazines]) about those choices.  In other words, the choice was a bad one but we were told that it was a Good Choice because those parties that mislead us are motivated to do so (primarily profit driven).

3. We know that our choice is a bad one, but we do it anyway.  We do it because we either like it (immediate gratification of a pleasurable experience) ; stress; it's convenient for us; there is peer pressure to continue; it saves us money; we do not have health as a goal; we are addicted to it; or we just don't care because we mistakenly believe that Medicine will save us if we get sick because of our choice.

There are also three primary reasons that we live in a Bad Environment and they are very similar to the three reasons that we make Bad Choices:

1. We live in or with Bad Environmental Choices because we don't know that they are bad.  No one knows they are bad or no one ever informed us of the Health consequences.

2. Again, we were deliberately misled and again primarily profit driven.

3. We are aware that those choices are harmful to us, or the environment, but we choose to ignore the facts because it is convenient for us not to pay attention - the choice makes our immediate life more pleasant or convenient or it's cheaper in some way.

When I did finally 'take the Red Pill' and wake up, I realized that my health and wellness was almost entirely in my own hands.  I initially found that fact to be a little scary and depressing because it meant that the responsibility was mine.  But, I soon realized that it was also quite exciting and empowering.  You see, it meant that I didn't have to be a helpless victim waiting to discover my fate - which disease was going to snuff out my life.  I had the ultimate power to  choose and therefore my fate was in my control and THAT was/is very empowering to me.

For me, what's done is done.  The mistakes I made cannot be changed and there's no point in wasting my time saying to myself, "I should have or I could have".  However, once I had acquired the knowledge, I decided to take charge and begin making some changes to improve my Choices and Environment.  I would suggest that the same applies to you - No Blame - but move forward bravely.

This has been a slow but steady process (sometimes difficult, most times a lot of fun) for Sharon and myself over many years.  It did not all happen at once and we did not get to the place we are overnight.

The first thing I did was start to reduce (not eliminate) the Bad Choices/Environments that I knew were bad, but were choices that I liked, was addicted to, or that were convenient for me.  For example, in our diets, I have eliminated: all grains including corn with the exception of flax; all legumes such a soya and beans; milk (not all dairy); and night shade plants like tomatoes and potatoes.  To this day, I still allow myself an occasional Bad Choice simply because I like it (I still have a sweet tooth and like an occasional homemade goodie).  My objective is to keep my body healthy enough that I can enjoy an occasional indulgence without worrying that I am harming it.

The next thing I did was to use my knowledge base to eliminate as many of the Bad Choices/Environments that most people would assume would not hurt them either because they hadn't been told they were bad or because they were deliberately deceived for profit.  For example, I chose a deodorant for us to use that does not contain aluminum chlorohydrate; we have a small water distiller that purifies our drinking water; and we have a chlorine filter on our shower head.  We also use non-fluoridated toothpaste.

The third thing I did was start to use my power as a consumer as a means to start to change the profit motive of the big corporations.  Money talks and as the consumer we have a very powerful voice.  By boycotting foods, and items that contribute to Bad Choices/Environments you would be amazed at how quickly corporations can change their tune.

One of my Missions in life is to create a healthy lifestyle for Sharon and myself and to help others do the same.  That is why I put together all the Workshops that we ran here at our Centre over the last few years: 'Discovering Wellness', 'Healthy Eating', 'Healthy Moving' and 'Healthy Thinking'.  I did that in order to share the information about Wellness Prevention strategies out to my patients and the community at large.  My intent was to act as an advocate for my patients that want to move towards Wellness.  The same principle applies with this blog.  In return, the only thing I asked is that they pass the information about Wellness onto their friends and loved ones - pay it forward!  Also, if they had any connections with people of political influence that they pass the concept of Wellness strategies on to those individuals.

Personally I think that I'm worth the time and effort so I can enjoy the occasional Honey Volcano without having to worry about my health.  Don't you think you and your loved ones are worth the time and effort too???
